Fresno Police investigators say the man who was shot and killed by six officers last Wednesday was actually the one who made the 9-1-1 call.
Police say last Wednesday, Monge was outside of his home when he fired two rounds with a shotgun. Responding officers say after a tense, 10 minute stand-off, Monge raised his shotgun and pointed it at police. That's when the six officers opened fire.
Prior to the standoff, police say 22-year-old Elias Monge called police at around 8:30 a.m., prior to any shots being fired. Police say he told dispatch a suspect was outside his home, firing a shotgun. They say Monge didn't identify himself in the call. It was later determined that he was the one on that call and the one who fired the weapon.
“It's a tragedy that really leaves more questions than answers because we'll never know what prompted this state of mind that ultimately resulted to this man's death,” said Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer.
Monge's roommate and a neighbor also called 9-1-1. Monge's roommate says he was a very cool guy, but was very depressed. Monge joined the California Army National Guard in 2009. He was a member of the 1106th Aviation Unit, in Fresno.
