Starting this week the Monterey Street Bridge will quietly come down piece by piece. It's forced three homeless encampments to shut down. The bridge was built back in the 1940's.
Fences were put up to keep the homeless off the property. The public works director says the demolition will take close to 90 days. But don't expect any wrecking balls or TNT.
The bridge sits too close to highway 41 and train tracks. So the bridge will be torn down piece-by-piece. The span was shut down in 2004 mainly because it was deteriorating. But it's not the only reason.
"Because the bridge is no longer critical to the traffic patterns we made the decision to proceed with the demolition," said Public Works Director Patrick Wiemiller.
Demolishing the span costs $1 million compared to rehabbing it which would cost $20 million.
