The school year is getting off to a somber start for some in the south valley.
41 year old Scott Nelson died in a cycling accident in Exeter. He was a long time coach and teacher at Mt. Whitney High School. According to CHP Nelson died after he collided with a jogger.
Investigators say Nelson was riding down Rocky Hill when the accident happened. Officers say Nelson was wearing a helmet at the time. The jogger was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Sergio Flores is a former student of Mr. Nelson. He says, "He's always there for me. To help me and he's a pretty awesome guy. Once you get to know him your like I want to know more about him. Meet his family. Things like that."
Thursday was the first day of school for Mount Whitney, and counselors have been on campus to to help students and teachers deal with the tragedy.
Jeff Hohne is the Principal at Mt. Whitney. He says, "We won't be the same. We're going to be good but your not even the same after somebody like Scott. We're going to be different. It was a huge piece of our community of our family."
