A volley of gunfire (pop - pop - pop), an officer down. 28-year-old Jared Slocum shot in the head, seen clutching his neck.

Though seriously injured, Slocum returned fire, unloading 2 rounds before backing away and stumbling to the ground.
His partner and 2 neighbors rushed to his aide. Slocum carried to safety.
"I could smell the gunfire - it was so rapid." Daniel Castro watched it all. "They were just going pop pop pop pop, right behind the cars. It was just like a movie. It was so surreal."
A 4 year veteran of the El Cajon Police Department, Slocum and his rookie partner were responding to a domestic violence call. Investigators say the suspect, Kevin Collier, killed his one year old daughter and mother in law before burning her home to the ground.
When police arrived on scene, they say Collier suddenly open fire.
His charred remains, investigators believe, were found inside the home.
"I'm confirming that the suspect had sent messages to friends and family that he had killed his mother in law and infant child."
Although critically injured, officer Slocum is expected to recover.
A young father and husband, lucky to be alive, determined to survive.
