Rayshawn Neely spoke from a hospital-style bed rolled into his Madera living room. He was in high-spirits, but wanted to clear some things up.
Neely was injured last Friday when a car slammed into him at a PG&E worksite near McKinley and Marks. Neely was pinned between two vehicles.
A nurse who saw it happen came to help. Then, the driver of the car got out and started attacking Neely and the woman who came to his aid.
The suspect had a hitchiker in the passenger seat. That man started hitting the suspect, Jett McBride with a hatchet.
Neely confirmed all of that is true, but he says the man with the hatchet is not the only person who came to help. In fact, the attack didn't stop until Neely's coworkers tackled McBride.
Neely says he hopes the suspect "gets the help he needs": but also wants to see justice get served. His leg is shattered and will take months to recover.
Neely is a Marine. He says he used to brag about having strong bones, because he's never broken one.
His children are having a hard time adapting to seeing their dad hurt, since he rarely is. It will take a month or two before he's back on his feet and can begin rehab. After that, Neely says he's looking forward to returning to work.
