Fresno police are investigating an officer involved shooting that shut down the intersections and nearby roads near Belmont and Abby in central Fresno for several hours on Tuesday morning.
Officers responding to a welfare check discovered a man walking in the area carrying an approximately 12 inch steak or kitchen knife.
Shortly after they arrived, officers say the man began pounding on the windows of a vehicle that had driven by and stopped at the intersection. A second officer who appeared on scene approached the suspect and at that time and the suspect then charged the officer while still holding the knife.
The officer fired multiple times at the suspect in an effort to halt his approach and the man eventually died from his injuries.
The suspect has not been identified but authorities do believe he was approximately 30 years old.
The intersection of Belmont and Abby was closed for several hours as police investigated the incident.
