Motorist Killed While Checking Tire
A Fresno man was killed after he got out of a broken down car on Highway 99 at 6:30 Thursday night. The California Highway Patrol says four people were in a car going north on Hwy. 99 just north of 180 when one of the tires blew out.
The driver pulled over to the right shoulder, and the four got out of the car to look at the damaged tire. A passing car hit two of the men. Both were taken to Community Regional Medical Center.
Daniel Torres, 22, was pronounced dead at the hospital. Cesar Padua, 40, suffered major injuries.
City Council to Vote on Budget
A budget vote is expected today by the Fresno City Council.
Fresno's total operating budget for the coming fiscal year is $1.3 billion.
The cut to the general fund is about $215 million.
Budget negotiations have been highlighted by the reappearance of a proposal to privatize commercial solid waste, which was voted down earlier this year. The plan now has a majority of council approval.
But, the city is still waiting on a three percent wage cut from its employees.
Plan to Legalize and Tax Marijuana
A new piece of legislation could allow states to legalize and tax marijuana. Several members of congress have introduced a bill that would leave the marijuana issue up to the states. The bipartisan bill also deals with medicinal marijuana. Critics argue legalizing marijuana would add a deeper criminal element to our streets. Local advocates say it's a step in the right direction.
