Softball Falls to La Tech 3-2

The 10th ranked Bulldog softball team struck early but was unable to hold off Louisiana Tech in extra innings as the Bulldogs fell 3-2. Fresno State will play the winner of the loser-out game between New Mexico State and Utah State at 10:00 p.m. pst on Thursday.

Fresno State got a single to left field by Caitlin Stiglich and she scored from first base off a single down the left field line by Aja Scheuber. The Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead after one inning of play.

The Bulldogs extended to their lead after Stiglich hit a single to left field. Michelle Palazuelos pinch ran for her and scored off a single to center by Andrea Ortega. Scheuber moved to second after she drew a four-pitch walk. It was 2-0 with no outs in the top of the sixth.

Krissi Oliver, the starting pitcher for Louisiana Tech was replaced by Wanda Malone. Malone walked Lisamarie Coronado to load the bases.

The Lady Techsters would rally in the bottom of the sixth and tied the game at 2-2.

Louisiana Tech would score in the bottom of the eight for the 3-2 victory and to advance to the semifinal vs. Nevada Thursday at 5:00 p.m. pst.

Six of the first nine outs of the game for Louisiana Tech were strikeouts by Bulldog pitcher Morgan Melloh as she broke the school record in strikeouts with her fifth strikeout in the bottom of the third inning. The previous record was set by Robin Mackin her freshman year in 2006 at 402. Melloh finished the game with 12 strikeouts and now has 410 on the year.
