Softball Shuts Out Sac State In The First Round

By KSEE Sports

The Fresno State Bulldogs looked impressive in the opening game of the Fresno Regional in the NCAA Tournament Friday night, defeating Sacramento State 11-0 in five innings. Improving to 52-11 on the season, the No. 12 Bulldogs play No. 24 Cal in the winner's bracket at 12:00 p.m. Saturday at Bulldog Diamond.

Haley Gilleland was hit by a pitch and Jenna Cervantez hit a bomb to center for a 2-0 Bulldog lead. Caitlin Stiglich was then hit by a pitch followed by a walk to Aja Schueber.

Gilleland stole a base in the bottom of second and she scored the third run of the game from second off a single by Stiglich to center.

The Bulldogs would strike again in the bottom of the third after back-to-back singles by Ashley White and Nicole Angene before Morgan Melloh cleared the bases with her first triple of the year for a 5-0 lead.

Cervantez hit in Melloh from third with a single for a 6-0 lead.

Kayla Meeks for the Hornets left in the bottom of the third with two outs, allowing eight six runs on seven hits. Brittani Clifford replaced Meeks in the circle.

A Scheuber single up the middle scored two more, for an 8-0 Bulldog lead.

Mallory Perkins walked with two outs followed by Gilleland being hit by a pitch for the second time in the game in the bottom of the fourth.

Stiglich would hit a bases loaded double for an 11-0 lead. It was her 16th double of the year, tying her for sixth in a single season.

Melloh ties Robin Mackin's record from last season with 55 appearances on the year. Melloh ended with eight strikeouts and allowed just two hits and becomes the second pitcher on the year to reach the 40-win mark.

The home run by Cervantez gives her 14 on the season, tying her for fifth in a single season.

The 11-run margin of victory was the most by any team up to this point in the 2008 NCAA tournament.

Fresno State is now 2-0 on the year against the Hornets, defeating them 4-2 in March at the Bingham Toyota Classic.

This was the Bulldogs first mercy-rule game since March 28 at Utah State.

The Bulldogs will take on Cal at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow. Cal defeated San Diego State in game 4-1. SDSU and Sac State will meet in the loser-out game at 2:30.

In other games involving WAC schools, Hawai'i defeated Mississippi 9-7 in the Tempe Region, Nevada defeated Purdue 4-1 in the UCLA Regional and Louisiana Tech defeated Auburn 2-1 in 12 innings at Texas A&M.
