Bulldogs Make School History

It was a history making day at the Save Mart Center on Thursday as the Fresno State women's basketball team hit a school record 16 3-pointers and beat UC Santa Barbara 71-54. The win ups the Bulldogs record to 2-0 on the young season while UCSB dropped to 1-1.

The team single game three-point record stood for nearly 20 years as the previous record was 15 against Baylor on December 1, 1989.

"It is really nice," Fresno State's Bailey Amundsen said. "As a team I thought we played really well. To break a school record with 16 three's is awesome. The points don't matter. I am just glad we got the win."

Fresno State was 16 of 31 from the 3-point line (51.6 percent) and hit 11 in the first half. All but eight baskets were 3-pointers for the Bulldogs.

"We take what they gave us," Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins. "They started off in a zone. The old school mentality is to get the ball inside. This team can shoot the basketball. We try not and feel guilty that this team can shoot 30 three's. That is ok. It was what they were giving us."

Bailey Amundsen finished with a double-double for the second straight game as she had a career high 26 points and 11 rebounds. She was 9 of 14 from the field and hit six of nine from behind the three-point line.

Jaleesa Ross had 15 points while LaShay Fears had 12 points. Ross hit five 3-pointers, Fears two and Hayley Munro, Ashley Walker and Joh-Teena Filipe each hit one. Fears hit the record breaking 3-pointer with 2:31 left in the game to give Fresno State the 71-54 advantage.

Fresno State held UCSB to 39 percent shooting and the `Dogs out rebounded the Gauchos 41-28. Munro had a career-high 12 boards to go along with Amundsen's 11.

"We know we played a very good team in UCSB," Wiggins said. "I was very proud of our players' effort. We shot the ball well but if you look at it we really rebounded and hustled well. We stepped up to a really big challenge. That is a good basketball team and they will win a lot of games this year."

Other than a quick 2-0 lead in the opening seconds, the Bulldogs never trailed and their first 10 baskets were 3-pointers that allowed them to jump out to a 30-12 lead following an Amundsen 3-pointer with 4:42 left until halftime.

Fresno State led 37-20 at halftime and led by as many as 21 in the second half at 45-24 and 48-29 following back-to-back 3-pointers by Amundsen.

UCSB got within 10 at 61-51 with 5:54 to play in the game but the Bulldogs quickly extended their lead 68-51 a little over a minute later.

Fresno State returns to the floor on Sunday at 2 p.m. when they play at Sacramento State. The Bulldogs return to the Save Mart Center on December 4 when they play host to Mountain West Conference power TCU.
