Fresno State-Bulldogs senior linebacker Travis Brown was named Monday to the 43rd annual Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List, presented to college football's top lineman or linebacker.
Eligibility for the award is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage. Brown is one of seven Mountain West football players named to the watch list.
Brown, a 6-1, 236-pound outside linebacker from Fresno, Calif., was also named to the 2012 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List last week. The Bronko Nagurski Trophy honors the nation's best defensive player.
A 2011 first-team All-WAC selection, Brown recorded a team-high 85 tackles last season to go along with 8.5 tackles for a loss and three sacks.
He has 189 tackles in his career, 19.5 tackles for a loss and five sacks. Brown also garnered second-team All-WAC accolades as a sophomore in 2010 and he has played in all 39 Fresno State games since arriving on campus as a true freshman in 2009.
The candidates earned a place on the official watch list by earning All-American honors last season, by being named to their respective all-conference first team last season as selected by the conference's head coaches, by being projected to be an All-American or first team all-conference player for the coming season, or by nomination approved by the Rotary Lombardi nominations committee.
The Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List will be periodically updated and revised up to the first round of voting to determine the 25 quarterfinalists for 2012. The winner of the 43rd Rotary Lombardi Award will be announced Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012 at The Hobby Center in Houston, Texas.
Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly earned the award last season.
