Defense Holding It Down

Looking to put the past in the past, the 2009 Bulldog defense, led by senior Moses Harris and juniors Ben Jacobs and Chris Carter, has vowed to return the defensive unit to the dominating units of years past. In Saturday's scrimmage, the first of call camp, the defense made huge statement in that regard.

The white-clad defensive team looked down right dirty in dominating the scrimmage, forcing two big turnovers, breaking-up passes with athletic plays and big hits, and attacking their team mates in the backfield. The first and second defensive units did not allow a touchdown in nearly 80 plays and forced six tackles behind the line of scrimmage, including four sacks.

Cornerback Isaiah Green recovered a fumble and had in interception, while linebacker Nico Herron had seven tackles, one for a loss as the Dog swarmed the Fresno State offensive unit.

The defense looked especially good in goal line and short yardage situations, where it made several big plays to stop the offense from scoring a touchdown and from converting on fourth down and short yardage situations.

Senior cornerback, A.J. Jefferson, one of the nation's most explosive special teams players, had an excellent scrimmage with six tackles and he broke up two pass attempts. Junior safety Lorne Bell showed why he's one of the hardest hitters on the team, knocking Darren Newborn away from a ball and making other big hits during the night.
