FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Freshman Greg Smith continued his low post dominance and recorded his second-straight and third double-double in just his fourth game as a Bulldog, yet in a hotly contested battle, San Diego State edged Fresno State 62-58 in West Coast Classic action on Monday night in the Save Mart Center.
"We grew tonight," head coach Steve Cleveland said of his team's performance. "I was pleased with the effort and for us to come back from that Seattle game and play this well was good to see. San Diego State is a very deep team. They are a top 25, top 30 team and I think they have a great chance to win the Mountain West Conference this year."

Smith shot 8 of 11 from the field, to improve to 27 of 33 in field goal attempts on the season. Also, in double figures for the Bulldogs were Mychal Ladd (14) and Paul George (12).

Billy White led SDSU with 22 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 19.5 seconds remaining, as San Diego State held off Fresno State 62-58 on Monday night in the West Coast Classic.

Tyrone Shelley added 17 points for the Aztecs (3-1), capped by two free throws with 2.9 seconds left that clinched the victory.

Greg Smith led the Bulldogs (2-2) with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Neither team led by more than four points in a competitive second half.

Before his go-ahead free throws, White tied the score 56-56 by sneaking behind Fresno State's zone for a putback following a missed 3-pointer with 1:59 left.

The Bulldogs led 29-25 at halftime thanks in large part to Ladd's sharp shooting. Ladd scored 11 of the Bulldogs' first 16 points, including three 3-pointers.

Fresno State now hits the road for a Saturday afternoon game at Santa Clara on Nov. 28 for their third West Coast Classic game. The Bulldogs next home game will be a special night at Selland Arena for the Classic finale against Pacific on Dec. 1 at 7 p.m.
