Prandini soars in CIF state prelims

If Friday's preliminary events were any indication, Jenna Prandini is all set to put on a show for the ages on Saturday.

The Clovis High junior stole the show with a nation-leading 20-7 3/4 foot long jump at the CIF State Track & Field Championship preliminaries on Friday. The jump was wind-aided, but was more than enough for her to advance to Saturday's final.

Prandini also broke barriers with his 100 meter dash, turning in a blistering time of 11.34 seconds--second in the nation only to rival Ashton Purvis of St. Elisabeth (Oakland), who ran a nation's best time of 11.22. Prandini is also the favorite in the girls' triple jump.

Clovis East shot-putter and discus thrower Willy Irwin positioned himself as the main rival to defending state champion Matt Darr in both events on Friday. Irwin led the way in the shot put qualifier with a toss of 62.06, then followed up with a nation's best discus throw of 208.10 feet. Darr qualified for the finals in both events.
