She called for help. Then she answered the call.

Police were called to a home near Backer and Huntington in Southeast Fresno just after noon on Tuesday. A woman said her brother was attacking her.

When an officer entered the home, the same man focused his attack on police. The man's sister and a young child fled to another room for safety.

Police say the unidentified 34-year-old was high on methamphetamine. They say that's what helped the suspect gain the upper hand on the police officer.

The suspect's sister heard the officer cry for help. When she saw her brother chocking the officer and on the verge of unholstering his weapon, she pounced.

The woman tackled, bit and hit her own brother; knocking him away from the officer. When the man charged police again, a single shot proved fatal.

The officer escaped with cuts and bruises. The investigation is ongoing, but already Fresno police are acknowledging that, had the woman not attacked her own brother, the officer involved could have lost his life.
