Firefighters found nearly 100 pounds of gunpowder when they were called to a shed fire in central Fresno today.

It happened on north Thorne avenue just after 4 o'clock.

The fire department's hazardous materials response team and the Fresno police bomb squad were all on the scene.

The owner was home at the time of the fire.

He let firefighters know about the gunpowder in large containers in the shed.

It forced the evacuation of surrounding homes.

Officials say about 25 homes in the area were without power for most of the evening.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
