It's a service we are all familiar with, mail delivered curbside six days a week. The Postal Service is looking to change that soon.
On Wednesday, US Post Master General Pat Donahoe announced, "Mail delivery will will occur Monday through Friday and we will not deliver nor collect mail on Saturday."
The announcement didn't surprise many in Tulare. The agency has been bleeding red ink for years. The cost of business is up and letter volume is down. Customers like Robert Cummings say it was only a matter of time, "They're in trouble because people are using it less so if they have to cut back, they have to cut back."
The change wouldn't take effect until August. If approved, package deliveries would stay the same. Mail would still go to PO Boxes on Saturdays and post offices that are open that day would stay that way.
Tulare Resident Don Borum said, "It might be a bit inconvenient for people but we can live with it and if in fact it's going to save the postal service millions of dollars... it seems like a good idea to me."
The plan is expected to save The Postal Service $2 Billion a year. On top of that, it says package delivery is up 14% since 2010. Still, internet is killing snail mail.
Customers like Donna Whitley wouldn't want to see the service go away but she says it seems to be inevitable, "I would miss chatting with them (mail carriers) cause they're nice people... so I'm glad they're still gonna have some service to deliver."
The plan will go to congress for approval soon. Although, the US Post Master General says he's confident he can end Saturday deliveries without it.
