Visalia police are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that happened at Beech and Pinkham just after 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Police say an officer made a traffic stop, but the driver failed to obey commands. That's when shots were fired into the car. Why the officer opened fire has not been released at this time. The male suspect was taken to Kaweah Delta hospital where he later died.

Sgt. Paul Esquibel, Visalia PD said, "It's unfortunate that this did happen. But I'm glad no officers were injured. Again it's unfortunate that one person is deceased as a result of this."

A nearby school was temporarily placed on lock-down. The officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave. The Tulare County Sheriff's Office is now handling the investigation.
