A Severe Thunderstorm Warning means that a severe thunderstorm has been reported, indicated by radar, or is developing. These storms can produce tornado-speed winds, hail of 3/4-inch or larger, and heavy rain. Seek shelter in a sturdy structure, as outlined below.

In The Home: Stay away from windows and doors. Flying debris and/or hail during periods of high winds can cause serious injury. Be aware that severe thunderstorms can quickly spawn a tornado. Be prepared to take shelter if conditions worsen.

In Schools: Go to the basement if available. Otherwise, go to an interior hallway or small room. Stay out of large rooms such as cafeterias, auditoriums, or gymnasiums. Do not send children home or keep them on busses if a severe thunderstorm is imminent or occurring.

In Mobile Homes: Abandon your mobile home in for a sturdier shelter. Damaging winds can easily push a mobile home on its side or destroy it, causing injury and death.

In Your Car: Strong thunderstorm winds can easily push an automobile off the road, especially high-profile vehicles like semi-trucks, campers, and vans. Seek safe shelter if one is nearby. Otherwise, pull off to the side of the road until the storm passes. Do not drive into areas with large hail, which can break your windows. These areas of large hail are prime locations for tornadoes, so be alert.

Outdoors: Go to a sturdy shelter. Do not take refuge under a tree. Get out of boats and head for the shore as soon as possible to avoid the risk of capsizing or creating a lightning target. Campers need to be especially alert for the dangers of falling trees, lightning, or rapid flash flooding near rivers and streams.
