The Heat Index is the temperature perceived by the body, and is the combined effects of the actual temperature and the relative humidity.

A Heat Advisory warns of a forecast Heat Index of 105-115°F during the day and/or a Heat Index of 80+°F overnight.

An Excessive Heat Warning is issued when the Heat Index is expected to be over 115°F during the day and 80+°F overnight.

When these cautions are issued, limit outdoor activity and drink plenty of non-alcholic beverages. Check on the elderly, infants, and pets as they are more suseptible to dehydration and heat stroke.

Recognizing Heat Illnesses

Heat Cramps are painful muscle spasms in the abdomen and legs, are the first signals that the body is having trouble with heat.

Heat Exhaustion is more severe and often affects persons involved in strenuous activities, or those wearing heavy clothing on hot humid days. Symptoms include cool, moist pale skin, headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness, and exhaustion.

Heat Stroke is the most severe heat emergency, and often occurs when people ignore the symptoms of heat exhaustion. The symptoms include red, hot, dry skin, changes in consciousness, rapid weak pulse, and rapid shallow breathing.

Treating Heat Illnesses

  • Get the victim out of the heat.

  • Loosen tight clothing.

  • Remove perspiration-soaked clothing.

  • Apply cool, wet cloths to the skin.

  • Fan the victim.

  • If the victim is conscious, give cool water to drink.

  • Call an ambulance if the victim refuses water, vomits, or starts to lose consciousness.
