Flash Flooding

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions favor the development of thunderstorms which may produce heavy rain and flash flooding. If you are near a river or creek, or in a low-lying area, keep an eye out for heavy rain, rising water, and tune to KSEE 24 for updates.

A Flash Flood Warning is issued when flash flooding has been reported and/or radar indicates heavy amounts of rain in a short period of time. Stay indoors and avoid driving through flooded areas. If you are in a flood-prone location or downstream of a dam, seek higher ground.

Homes, Mobile Homes, Schools: If you are a flood-prone location, move to higher ground as quickly as safely as possible. Call for emergency personnel to help evacuate if needed. Otherwise, stay where you are until the flooding subsides. People in homes and schools need to be alert for basement flooding. Be especially cautious if your basement has electrical outlets and appliances.

In Your Car: Do not drive across flooded roadways. It is difficult to judge the depth of the water, especially at night. Most flash flood deaths occur in vehicles. It only takes 1 to 2 feet of water to float your vehicle. If your car does get stuck or stalled in the water, abandon it a quickly and safely as possible. Call for emergency assistance on a cellular phone if available.

Outdoors: Stay away from rivers, creeks, streams, and drainage ditches. Do not allow children to play near these areas, because they could be swept away quickly in raging water. People camping need to be cautious, especially if they are near locations with steep terrain or in a canyon. Quickly and safely head to higher ground, away from flood-prone areas.
