In general, a Watch means a hazardous event is possible. An Advisory means the conditions are occuring or immenent, and could cause a signficant inconvienence. A Warning advises a threat to life and/or property is occuring or is immenent.

Wind

A High Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds of 30-40 mph or non-convective wind gusts of 45-58 mph are occuring or imminent.

A High Wind Warning forecasts sustained winds of 40+ mph for at least one hour, or non-convective wind gusts of 58+ mph.

Stay inside a sturdy shelter and avoid windows. See our Wind Speed page »

Poor Visibility

A Dense Fog Advisory means that fog has reduced visibility to less than a 1/4 mile in a widespread area.

Blowing Dust/Sand Advisories warn of a concentration of blowing dust or sand that reduces visibility to less than 1/4 mile, posing travelling hazards.

If you are in your car when this occurs use your LOW BEAM headlights, then find a safe place to park, or pull off to the side of the road until conditions improve. Use hazard flashers so other drivers can see you.

Frost or Freeze

Frost Advisories are issued when widespread frost is expected during the growing season. Note that frost can occur with temperatures above freezing.

A Freeze Advisory during the growing season means widespread temperatures below 32°F are expected.

Take measures to protect outdoor plants and crops.
