The Visalia Unified Middle School League Championships were held on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Redwood High School. Six teams competed for the honor of league championship over all; Divisidero, Green Acres, La Joya, JFK, Valley Oak, Woodrow Wilson.
La Joya Middle School ran away with the championship beating all other teams by over 121 team points. Of the 31 wrestlers that this team has, 14 were in the finals competing for first or second place. Of those 14 finalists, 4 walked away with the first place over all in their weight class. 74lb weight class was taken by Maverick Souza. The 88lb weight class was taken by Ivan Aguirre. The 144lb was taken by Joshua Sanchez. And last but not least, the 205 weight class was taken by Luke Apodaca. There might have been one more wrestler in the mix had he not had his collar bone broken for him during a match.
La Joya’s Most Valuable Player is Ivan Aguirre. He went undefeated in 7th and 8th grade. He is a 3 time KTWA (Kings Tulare county Wrestling Association) Freestyle Champion. When he battled for the championship in 7th grade against an eighth grader the match went into an unheard of 3 over-times.
La Joya’s Coaches are JJ Holt and Anthony Aguirre. Team Dads are Richard Delgado, John Ruelas, Shawn Siebert, Shane Souza, Nathan Stoll.
Here is a story about the team that was sent into one of the Asst Principals Bob Cesena about an incident that happened on January 12th of this year.

Subject: Another Bad Boy
Just thought I would relay another story about a bad boy. We here so many.
A boy was skate boarding through the park behind La Joya yesterday. The park was filled with people. There were a lot of people running. Among those people running, were the La Joya Wrestling team. Doing what they have been doing for most of Christmas break, 20 laps around the park with 10 pushups after each lap.
This bad boy decided that he was going to steal the skate board sitting on the table unattended. Little did he know that, that particular skate board happened to belong to one of the students on the wrestling team. As soon as it happened, one of the wrestlers running his laps noticed it and yelled out, "Hey AJ(Austin Fletcher), he stole your board!" At that point a majority of the wrestlers took out after the thief. As he was on a skate board, he thought he had an advantage over the runners. Little did he know...
Jacob Romero was the first to reach him followed closely by Aaron Cruse and the rest of the wrestling team. At first, the bad boy was indignant when he noticed the two wrestlers who had chased him down. Talk about priceless, the look on his face changed dramatically when he say the rest of the wrestlers come around the corner. Upon seeing that he gave the board to Jacob and left before the rest of the team caught up.
The bad boy left to steal again another day, but the team work exhibited by the La Joya Wrestling Team was priceless.
We hear enough stories about the bad things our boys do.
