The foxtail outfield

Wheelchairs don't work well in foxtails

I have 2 daughters who use electric wheelchairs to move around. They have muscular dystrophy and were involved with the MDA telethon for many years. As they grew I needed to have more space for a handicapped bathroom and second bedroom so I started an addition onto the back of my house. The yard was ignored. Basic mowing was all it got. Keeping 2 children with special needs involved in anything that interested them took priority. The girls are successful young adults now who need a private space to relax and enjoy fresh air. I am so proud of the independence they have achieved and would really like to reward them with a place they can relax in and have friends over. One that they can easily navigate and be able to entertain. My oldest is finishing her studies at Fresno State in exercise science, with studies in nutrition and occupational therapy, a daring career choice for someone in a wheelchair. My youngest is finishing her first year at law school. That is part of why the backyard has not been kept up. The lives of these amazing girls has been a busy one for this single mom who also works full-time to make ends meet.My yard right now has mostly foxtails about knee high, 2 mulberry trees, a garden that has been abandoned and a rusty old shed that has old lawn furniture that hasn't been used in years. I don't have the know how but I'm really willing to learn how to make my field of dreams come true. Fresh air and color and some kind of ground cover that a heavy wheelchair won't get stuck in or be bounced around on. Something that will be easy to maintain. I'll make every effort to keep up any improvements made, to keep it an enjoyable oasis for my family and friends who are always welcome. A colorful oasis won't hurt this mom either. Please help make my field of dreams a reality.

My daughter is also trying to get a backyard makeover. She is a teacher at Fresno State in exercise science, so I am sure she knows your daughter. What a wonderful job you have done with your daughters! You must be a wonderful mom.
