I've procrastinated the painful act of filling up my gas tank, but I made it just in time today for this party going on at the Visalia Costco! I couldn't believe what I pulled in to so I couldn't resist the opportunity to freeze time, economic times that is, in a photo. It was just as if the 70's came screaming back again. The days of odd & even ending numbers on our license plates may even rear (no pun intended) its ugly head. For those of you who may be too young, that's how it was determined when you could fill your gas tank, similar to the watering schedule most valley residents are trying to adhere to. Of course, you could always get gas from your best friend's dad's gas station back then. You may be hard pressed nowadays to find a local owner and not a manager who runs the place for an out of town proprietor.
True story: Back in the 70's, a friend of my family had a brother who worked for one of the major refineries as a truck driver. He was scheduled twice a week to drive his filled tanker and dump gas out in the Mojave Desert. They were told by their upper management that if they didn't drive up the prices of fuel by making less available it would be hard to meet the demands of their negotiated benefit package. I'm sure that record profits after the rise of prices didn't hurt the CEO's either.
So, every time I see long lines like the ones in this photograph I can't help but wonder. Oh, and by the way Costco was offering 87 octane at $3.97 a gallon and milk there wasn't far behind!
Gas Lines: Are they retro trendy too?
