The Buchanan Bears 10's advanced to the next round in the Cal Ripken World Series
after beating Harris Township, Indiana 3-1.
A tremendous pitching performance by both Grant Gambrell and Cory Williams kept Harris hitters off balance all day. Both pitchers recorded 4 strike outs each and give up a combined 5 hits. Harris' lone run with unearned.

The Bears scored their runs in the following way. In the 1st, with 2 outs, Cory Williams walked. Consecutive singles by Mitch Casillas and Martinez loaded the bases. With Mitchell Souza at the plate, Williams scored on a past ball.

In the Buchanan Bears 2nd, with one out, Marcus Cummins had the hit of the game that earned him the Player of the Game Award, a triple down the right field corner. Logan Krause’s ground out plated Cummins with the Bears’ go ahead run that proved to be the game winner.

In the 4th inning, DJ Martinez led off with a double up the middle. Kyle Wynn entered the game and pitch ran for Martinez. With one out, Josh Friesen flied out to deep right field that allowed Wynn to tag and advanced to third. Cummins walked to put runners at the corners. The base running speed combination proved too much for the Harris Township defense as Wynn stole home on a double steal.

The 3-1 lead for the Bears seemed comfortable with Williams coming into pitch, but Harris was not done just yet.

In the top of the 5th Williams got the first batter on a called 3rd strike, but then allow the leadoff hitter, Luke Schneider to reach 1st on a hard driven, hard to handle line drive to the 1st baseman. The next batter struck out swinging for out number 2. Everything seemed to be in hand for the Bears, but Pinch Hitter Anthony Louisa promptly hit Williams’ 1st pitch to center field to put runners at 1st and 2nd. Williams then walked Home Run hitting contest finalist, Ryan Herman to load the bases on a 3-2 count.

Next batter Brandon Schneider, who laced a double in the 2nd and hit a shot to deep centerfield in the 3rd, came to the plate looking to tie the game. Szynski was not close swinging at a Williams curve ball on the 1st pitch for strike 1. 1 ball and 1 strike later, Williams got Herman swinging on a 1-2 curveball that ended the threat.

Ball game. Bears win 3-1.
