Fred was born February 21, 1996 to the owners of a local Fresno pet store. I was 20 years old when I found Fred; he was only 5 weeks old. I paid a token $40 for him and we were on our way to a life of fun and adventure together. I had no way of knowing this at the time but Fred would shape up to be what is known in my circle of friends as “The Smartest Dog on the Planet”. No matter where I went, Fred was always by my side. It has happened to me on more than one occasion where I run into someone out in public and they would approach me and say, “hey, I know you… you’re that guy with that dog Fred”. Know I’m a very outgoing and social person but it’s clear who has made a bigger impression, the dog. Most dogs learn commands; Fred would learn entire sentences only after hearing them a couple of times. Tricks? If you could think of it, he could do it without really being trained; he would simply follow instructions. Over the years Freds charm and loving nature has turned people that are just ok with dogs into all out dog lovers. I’ve spent all of my twenties and the first part of my thirties with this guy, more than a third of my life. I thought I would submit a couple photos of him from when we lived on the central coast together. I’m not a very good photographer but this guy is just very photogenic. As you can see, when its picture time he looks directly into the camera. Don’t tell him I said this but I think he really likes having his picture taken. The black and white photo was taken while we were strolling down Pismo Beach. The color picture was taken after he retrieved his favorite tennis ball from Lopez Lake near Arroyo Grande. People have called him names like; Super Dog, Fred - the really furry person, Fredrick Einstein, Professor Fred, Manbeardog but to me he’s just Fred. Even though he has slowed down quite a bit in his old age, he never stops amazing me with his brilliance.
