Milan Students Donate $1,750 in Toys

Visalia, CA - On Thursday, December 3, 2009, students from the Milan Institute in Visalia filled a sports utility vehicle with more than 300 toys for donation to the Visalia Emergency Aid Council. The Administrative Medical Assistant day and evening class students have been raising toy-buying money since October. The students created gift baskets, made blankets, sold baked goods and made candy leis and "boo grams" for Halloween. An impressive $1,360 was raised, which resulted in $1,760 worth of toys thanks to a generous 20% discount from Big Lots.

The Milan Institute students wanted to help those in the community who are struggling. "We are all in that place or have been in that place of financial distress," student Melissa Bixler said. "Now we can help these needy kids, which some of us have in our own family.” School Director Patrick Taylor was inspired by the hard-work and motivation the students exhibited during the fundraiser. "These kids did everything themselves," stated Patrick. "They organized the bake sales and silent auctions and were energetic in helping out the many families that will receive these toys."

The toys will be distributed on Christmas Eve at the Visalia Emergency Aid Council's toy-distribution event. Sign-ups have begun and more than 3,500 people are expected to receive toys, blankets and food this year. Milan Institute is one of many organizations that stepped up to help the aid council after it lost its main sponsor just a few months before Christmas.
