Good Company Players present the award-winning musical about famed humorist and truth teller Will Rogers, whose story is told in the framework of a stylish entertainment that evokes both a Wild West Show and the Ziegfeld Follies. The show runs through September 16.
Fiddler on the Roof
Clem Rogers (DARREN THARP) celebrates the birth of baby Will surrounded by Will's six older sisters. From bottom right, clockwise: SARAH LOFGREN, THARP, ERICA CHEATHAM, JERRICA EDMUNDSON, KIM HENDERSON, ABBY SAGER
and KELLY GIBSON.
The Will Rogers Follies, Best Musical of 1991 and winnner of multiple Tony and Drama Desk awards, combines flashy Broadway with country folksiness: Showgirls, rope tricks, lots of Rogers' trademark political humor, big song-and-dance numbers and a tender love story.
The Will Rogers Follies features Eric Estep as Will and Lyndsie-June Garbett as Betty Blake Rogers. Estep was last seen in Forever Plaid at Roger Rocka's; Garbett returns to GCP's stage remembered by longtime audience members for her starring roles in the 80s in such shows as Kismet, Evita and Little Shop of Horrors.
The Will Rogers Follies is of course filled with Rogers' infamous witticisms, including:
“There's no trick to being a humorist when you have the whole government working for you;”
“We're all here for a spell; get all the good laughs you can;”
“I don't make jokes, I just watch the government and report the facts;”
And perhaps his most famous quote - and also his epitaph:
“I joked about every prominent man in my lifetime, but I never met one I didn't like.”
