Artichoke plants are a lot of fun to grow! Many people do not realize it, but Artichokes grow well here in the Valley. Even though the industry is a central coast plant, it does well here in our area too. There are several types of artichoke plants that all produce tasty veggie-fruit to eat. I enjoy growing dark purple gourmet Violetta and Romanesco. But I also grow the common Green Globe that is found in the grocery store. The largest artichoke variety grows up to 6 feet tall and 5 feet wide! The tastiest ones come from the second season of growth. With water, sunshine, mulch, and steer manure, artichoke plants will produce about 30 artichokes per year. They grow fantastic huge purple flowers that last for months. Plants last for about 5 years (even with our summer heat and winter frost). But, plants produce new runners and new growth each year. I presently have about 6 large and mature plants in my garden and about 24 smaller plants too.
