A rare occurence took place in Selma on Friday, April 16 when the Selma High School Class of 1940 had their 70th Reunion. 35 classmates, spouses and family members gathered at the Spike and Rail in a room with a beautiful view of the pond.
For the 23 members of the graduating class of 1940 it was easy to renew old friendships despite time and distance. Many of the friendships had begun more than 80 years ago. For the octegenarians present, it was as if time had ceased to exist and the room was full of joyful teenagers again.
The planning committee, led by Chairman Eddie Deis, consisted of Bob Bennett, Clyde Darling, Gola Gillespie, and Helen Hoyt. They arranged for a delicious lunch of either chicken piccata or barbecue tri-tip. The pre-meal invocation was lead by graduate Sam Smith.
Eddie Deis served as master of ceremonies. He welcomed everyone to the reunion, and those who live elsewhere, back to Selma. He pointed out the class pictures and pictures from former reunions that were mounted at the front of the room. Opportunity was given to classmates to speak and several took the opportunity to recall past events and fond memories.
All members were treated to breads by King's Hawaiian, donated by the son of Yoshiye Kuramoto. National Raisin Company donated boxes of raisins for everyone to enjoy.
The remainder of the day was spent catching up with old friends, making new ones and remembering the days of high school past.
