Fresno Bee's Academic All-Star 2010

-Ethan Cordova loves all types of animals, especially his pets -- Plaky, a millipede, and a lizard he named Freddy.

Ethan, a first-grader at McKinley Elementary in Fresno, enjoys reading and learning about insects. When he grows up, Ethan hopes to be a veterinarian so he can learn about and help all types of animals. "I will work with any animal," he said.

Ethan enjoys reading, because it allows him to satisfy his curiosity. "It's fun, because you learn new things," he said. Books about the human body and Spiderman are some of his favorite reads.

Teacher Julie Stevens, who nominated Ethan, said he has read more than 100 books. She said he is a great person and is always willing to help other students. "He has a winning personality and a great sense of humor," Stevens said.

Ethan earns straight A's and was given the Accelerated Reader award for the student who read the most books and the Tiger of the Month award for kindergarten and first grade.

Ethan's achievements include the equivalent of a 4.0 grade-point average; Accelerated Reader award; Tiger of the Month; Star Student award.

He often volunteers his time to read from the Bible to his church congregation. Ethan said he enjoys talking in front of a large crowd.

"It helps you express your feelings," he said.

Ethan also enjoys math, playing basketball and football, skateboarding, cooking and playing the drums.-
