The Terraces at San Joaquin Gardens donated $455 to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of Central California on Dec. 17. The senior living community donated $5 for each person who attended an open house event for the community’s brand-new memory support center, called The Grove. Nearly 100 guests toured the community. More than 560,000 Californians are projected to have Alzheimer’s by 2020 and the money raised will go towards research and support programs and services. The Grove at The Terraces at San Joaquin Gardens features 24 private rooms dedicated to Alzheimer’s and memory care and is the only memory care service in the area based around person-centered care.

Empathy, or more importantly the need for it, is universal. It spans race, religion, politics, abilities, geography, and gender. United Learning Foundation is an all- inclusive educational program created to teach this important lesson, as well as compassion, and a pro-hero (instead of antibullying) way of life through a dis/ABILITY awareness curriculum that is brought to individual, general education classrooms. U.L.F. is a proactive as opposed to reactive approach to teaching our children how to be empathetic and compassionate members of our society. Based in California, U.L.F. currently travels the country (and some day soon, the world) to reach thousands of children each year, from kindergarten through high school.

Clovis, CA - Milan Institute, a group of career schools offering training in the beauty, healthcare, massage, and business fields, recently presented a check for $1,472 to the Marjaree Mason Center. The donation is 85% of the total revenue raised from ticket sales to the Clovis campus’s fundraiser held on July 21st. It also includes a personal contribution from Milan Institute President Gary Yasuda. The school will also donate clothing, toys, and household items collected during the event. For more than 30 years, the Marjaree Mason Center has offered shelter and supportive services to victims of domestic violence in Fresno County. The center operates the county's only domestic violence shelters.

The Girls’ Night Out Carnivale fundraiser was a success thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Milan Institute students, faculty, and staff. Cosmetology students did manicures and hair styles for guests, while esthetician students created carnivale-themed makeup designs. Massage therapy students were on hand to provide relaxing chair massages. Attendees enjoyed live music, food, refreshments, giveaways, and shopping opportunities at booths hosted by local businesses. Milan students also hosted a fashion show featuring the latest summer trends. Guests were happy to know that the majority of the ticket sale revenue would help support a worthy cause. “We all know someone who has been hurt by domestic violence, whether it was a co-worker, friend, or family member,” said Milan Institute School Director Emily Samons. “It is important we do our part to help the victims within our community of such abuse.”

Currently, the Milan Institute campus in Clovis offers the following accredited programs: Cosmetology, Esthetician, Manicurist, Massage Therapy, and Medical Assisting. Both day and evening class schedules are offered, and financial aid is available for those who qualify (not applicable to Manicurist program). The school’s faculty has academic credentials with years of training or work experience in their areas of specialization. The administrative staff is committed to providing the individual student attention necessary to achieve success in the healthcare, beauty, and massage fields. The campus also provides employment services to all graduates to assist them with their new job search.

In addition to providing career training, Milan Institute in Clovis also has a student salon and massage spa open to the public. Clients can receive value-priced beauty and massage services such as haircuts, highlights, manicures, pedicures, facials, Swedish massage, hot stone massage, and sports massage. All services are performed by students under instructor supervision. The student salon and massage spa are located on campus at 731 West Shaw Avenue.

Milan Institute has been preparing students for the workforce since 1985 and has 19 campuses located throughout the western United States. The Milan Institute campus in Clovis is accredited by the Commission of the Council on Occupational Education located at 7840 Roswell Road, Building 300, Suite 325, Atlanta, GA 30350, Telephone: 770-396-3898 / FAX: 770-396-3790.
